American Green snakes are native to Eastern North America from the Great Lakes southward through Northeastern Mexico. Rough Green Snakes have keeled scales giving them a rough appearance and are mainly arboreal.  Smooth Green Snakes have smooth dorsal scales giving them a smooth appearance and are ground dwellers that prefer damp habitats close to water.  These snakes are active during the day with their peak at dusk.

 

Maximum size: 4.5’

 

Lighting:  Full spectrum fluorescent UV bulbs and a basking light are required.

 

Temperature range: Day 75° –88°F Night 65°-74°F

 

Food:  Crickets and waxworms coated in vitamin/calcium powder.   

 

Water: A bowl of clean water should always be available for soaking and drinking.

 

Housing/Habitat: Their natural habitat can be simulated with an aquarium equipped with an under tank heater at one end.  The bottom of the aquarium should be covered with a bark type liter, landscaped with plants and branches for basking and climbing.  Be sure to provide hiding places.
